Research group for synthesis and chemical analysis

The foundations of electrochemistry were laid almost a hundred years ago. The invention of polarography brought the Czech scientist Jaroslav Heyrovský the award of the Nobel Prize. Thanks to this fact, but not only, electrochemistry can look back at a great tradition in the Czech Republic.

Our laboratory is well adapted for the electrochemical detection of nucleic acids (DNA, RNA, including the small RNA and single nucleotides), proteins and peptides containing thiol groups (metallo-thionein) and a number of elements including heavy metals or semi-metals (such as Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Cr, Ti, Hg, Ag, Fe, As, Te and Se). The detection of the investigated substances is carried on both by the classical methods of polarography and by those utilizing solid or pasty electrodes.

The conjugation with electroactive markers (such as the process on the basis of quantum dots) can be used for substantially increasing the response of the analyte.

Among further domains of our interest also the development of sensors and biosensors should be mentioned (detection of platinum cytostatics, the study of DNA methylation in correlation with the origin of tumour diseases, determining the contamination of the environment by heavy metals etc.).
