Laboratory of Plants

The Plant laboratory is focused on research and study of nanomaterials and their effect in the field of agricultural biotechnology. With regard to extreme climate change, lack of suitable agricultural land and related food resource constraints, our laboratory aims to find possible solutions, through research into epigenetic mechanisms (RNA interference) and genetic engineering techniques (CRISPR / Cas system), for the regulation of gene expression and influencing the biochemical pathways of plant secondary metabolism. We also study abiotic and biotic stress in economically important crops and model plants. We also test the use of nanomaterials and new types of nanocomposites as potential nano-fertilizers and new generation insecticides in plant nutrition and protection. In the field of plant biotechnology, we also use the techniques of explant cultures and plant micropropagation in combination with nanomaterials and the CRIPSR / Cas system for cell transformation.

 

The main research is related to the following topics:

  • plant responses to stress caused by abiotic and biotic factors
  • nanomaterials and new types of nanocomposites as potential nano-fertilizers and new generation insecticides in plant nutrition and protection
  • influence of nanomaterials on secondary metabolism and gene expression of plants
  • study of explant cultures and micropropagation of important crops, with the possibility of their use in plant biotechnologies
  • use of nanomaterials as a vector for the CRISPR / Cas system to transform plant cells
  • study of genetic engineering techniques and the CRISPR / Cas system for the regulation of gene expression
  • elucidation of the role of RNA interference mechanism in biosynthetic pathways of plant secondary metabolism
