Habilitation procedure and procedure for appointment as a professor

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has prepared an application for accreditation in the field of habilitation proceedings and proceedings for appointment as a professor of Biological Chemistry. Accreditation was granted by the National Accreditation Office for Higher Education in 2020.

In 2018, a research strategy was proposed at Mendel University in Brno, which consists of 57 research plans of individual institutes, which are divided within the university into 5 key areas according to the Frascati Manual. This in-depth analysis makes it possible to describe in great detail the research and development strategies of individual workplaces so that the university is able to cover the areas in which it is applying for a habilitation and appointment procedure. The field of Biological Chemistry is primarily the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, while another 9 departments of the university also have this field emphasized in their research strategies.

The pedagogical, research and development activities of the Institute of Chemistry and Biochemistry focus on several areas that completely overlap with the field of chemistry and biochemistry. In the field of bioanalytical chemistry, the institute is engaged in research and development of detection procedures and platforms for the analysis of a wide range of substances from metals through low molecular weight metabolites to macromolecular biomarkers of serious diseases. Equally important is the focus on non-invasive diagnostics in medicine and the development of relevant tools using not only electrochemical but also optical detection techniques and fluorescence / luminescence imaging methods. The second area is research and development of advanced micro and nanomaterials, not only for the above-mentioned purposes, but also for the societal need to study their interactions with biomolecules in vivo. In addition, the institute develops materials with antimicrobial, antitumor or, conversely, properties that support the growth and development of both plant and animal organisms. Furthermore, the staff of the institute focuses on algal and plant biotechnologies, which are focused on the study of low molecular weight primary and secondary metabolites and their interactions with epigenetic mechanisms (especially small non-coding RNA and methylation) in different environmental conditions. Another research topic in this area is the study of the impact of nanotechnologies on the growth and development of plants and microalgae. The last area is the design and testing of materials for the targeted transport of substances in vitro and in vivo, including materials capable of transcytosis across the blood-brain barrier. An equally important part are microbiological laboratories dealing with the search for alternatives to antibiotic drugs, the study of complex microbiomes, but also the possible use of microbial enzymes in environmental applications. Due to a brief introduction to the breadth of professional topics, the field of Biological Chemistry is a suitable platform for their coverage.

The habilitation procedure and the procedure for appointment as a professor are initiated at Mendel University in Brno in accredited fields according to Act No. 111/1998 Coll., On Higher Education Institutions.
